Microneedling Research

Study: “A Single-Center Trial to Evaluate the Efficacy and Tolerability of Four Microneedling Treatments on Fine Lines and Wrinkles of Facial and Neck Skin in Subjects With Fitzpatrick Skin Types I-IV: An Objective Assessment Using Noninvasive Devices and 0.33-mm Microbiopsies”

Results: Thirty-two subjects (30 females, 2 males) completed all 7 visits.

  • Facial dermal and epidermal density increased 101.86% and 19.28%, respectively, from baseline at 3 months posttreatment.

  • Facial elasticity increased 28.2% from baseline at 3 months posttreatment. Facial attenuation coefficient increased 15.65% and 17.33% at 1 and 3 months posttreatment, respectively.

  • At study completion, blood flow at a depth of 300 µm decreased 25.8% in the face and 42.3% in the neck. (great for reducing skin redness)

  • Relative collagen type III and elastin gene expression was statistically higher 3 months posttreatment.

  • Dermal muscle formation was observed in 58% of biopsies extracted 3 months posttreatment compared with 15.3% at baseline.

Conclusions: The results illustrate the effects of microneedling treatments. Noninvasive measurements and biopsy data showed changes in skin architecture and collagen/elastin gene expression, suggesting skin rejuvenation, with new extracellular matrix production and muscle formation.

Study: “Review of applications of microneedling in dermatology”

Scar Treatment:

  • Results: All patients reported mild pain and edema at the treatment site which resolved within 24 hours. Otherwise, no adverse effects were noted. Patients collectively reported a 51%–60% improvement in scar appearance, 40%–50% improvement in skin texture, and 80%–85% overall satisfaction (p = 0.001) following six treatment sessions over the course of 3 months.15

Hair Regrowth:

  • Results: By the end of the study, mean change in hair count was significantly greater for the MN group (91.4 vs. 22.2, p = 0.039). Additionally, the initiation of new hair growth was first noticeable at 6 weeks in the MN group compared to 10 weeks in the minoxidil alone group. No adverse effects were noted by any of the participants.24

Conclusion: This review highlights evidence of the potential for MN in the treatment of several dermatologic conditions, including disorders of pigmentation, premalignant lesions such as AK, scarring secondary to acne and surgical procedures, and hair pathologies. Advantages include, but are not limited to, the good tolerability of treatment among patients. Overall, MN offers a simple yet cost-effective therapeutic modality with minimal adverse events and a promising safety profile.

Study: “A Randomized Evaluator Blinded Study of Effect of Microneedling in Androgenetic Alopecia: A Pilot Study”

Conclusion: Hair counts – The mean change in hair count at week 12 was significantly greater for the Microneedling group compared to the Minoxidil group (91.4 vs 22.2 respectively). (2) Investigator evaluation – Forty patients in Microneedling group had +2 to +3 response on 7-point visual analogue scale, while none showed the same response in the Minoxidil group. (3) Patient evaluation – In the Microneedling group, 41 (82%) patients reported more than 50% improvement versus only 2 (4.5%) patients in the Minoxidil group. Unsatisfied patients to conventional therapy for AGA got good response with Microneedling treatment.

Study: “Safety and Effectiveness of an Automated Microneedling Device in Improving the Signs of Aging Skin”

  • Conclusion: This study demonstrates that four microneedling treatments of facial skin, spaced four weeks apart, significantly improve lines, wrinkles, skin laxity and skin texture, 90 and 150 days after the first treatment. The treatment was well tolerated with minimal pain, discomfort, and downtime

Study: “Multiple microneedling sessions for minimally invasive facial rejuvenation: an objective assessment”

  • Results: Skin microneedling produced noticeable clinical improvement of photoaged skin, with corresponding histological enhancement. Compared to the baseline, collagen types I, III, and VII, as well as newly synthesized collagen, together with tropoelastin showed a statistically significant increase (P < 0.05) in response to treatment, while the mean level of total elastin was significantly decreased (P < 0.05) after treatment.

  • Conclusions: Skin microneedling is a promising minimally invasive treatment option with the advantage of increased collagen production. However, multiple sessions are usually needed to maintain the improvement achieved.

Study: “Is skin microneedling a good alternative method of various skin defects removal”

  • Conclusion: High effectiveness, limited number of side effects, and short recovery time, make skin microneedling a popular cosmetic, and medical treatment.

Study: "Efficacy and Tolerability of a Microneedling device for Treating Wrinkles on the Neck."

  • Results: The study was completed by 32 subjects. Wrinkle assessments demonstrated significant improvement in the neck areas (P < 0.001). Both Global Aesthetic Improvement Scales showed significant improvements at 90 days posttreatment (P < 0.001). Most subjects reported some level of improvement in their appearance at 30 days (73.3%) and 90 days (68.8%) posttreatment. The satisfaction questionnaire showed high levels of improvement in wrinkles (93.8%), satisfaction with the results (87.5%), and would recommend microneedling to friends and family members (80.6%).

  • Conclusions: Microneedling is a viable, minimally invasive option for treating wrin kles of the neck

Study: “Microneedling: Where do we stand now? A systematic review of the literature”

  • Results: Microneedling was investigated in experimental settings for its effects on atrophic acne scars, skin rejuvenation, hypertrophic scars, keloids, striae distensae, androgenetic alopecia, melasma and acne vulgaris. Several clinical trials used randomisation and single-blindation to strengthen the validity of the study outcome. Microneedling showed noteworthy results when used on its own and when combined with topical products or radiofrequency. When compared with other treatments, it showed similar results but was preferred due to minimal side effects and shorter downtime.

  • Conclusion: This systematic review positions microneedling as a safe and effective therapeutic option for the treatment of scars and wrinkles.

Study: “Microneedling in skin of color: A review of uses and efficacy”

  • Conclusion: Microneedling may offer a more advantageous safety profile, particularly in the skin-of-color population (Fitzpatrick skin types IV-VI), compared with more conventional resurfacing modalities. Thus far, it has been shown to be effective for a number of dermatologic conditions in this population, including scarring, melasma, melanosis, skin rejuvenation, acne vulgaris, and primary hyperhidrosis.

  • Acne Scars: Microneedling can also treat acne scarring through stimulating dermal remodeling and production of dermal components with minimal risk

  • Nonacne Scars: Several case reports describe successful treatment of nonacne scars in patients with skin of color using microneedling. In 1 report, a 15-year-old girl (FST V) was treated with microneedling for facial atrophic scars related to childhood varicella infection.5 After 3 treatments, significant improvement was observed. There were no reported side effects, apart from 1 week of erythema after each treatment session.
